Our History

Porth Harlequins RFC Mini & Junior section, is committed to providing sporting opportunities to the communities young, who may or may not have had the opportunity to play sport in a positive environment that is inclusive of all skill levels and abilities, The coaching is to be completed by suitably qualified coaches. The coaching is to be safe, fun, energetic and enjoyable. The club is open to all and is committed to ensuring that players of all abilities are given opportunities to play in games against other clubs.

Porth Harlequins RFC Mini & Junior section recognises that rugby is competitive and values winning, but primarily aims to develop the children’s skill levels and understanding, fuelling a life long interest in the game of Rugby Union.

At Porth Harlequins Mini & Juniors we aim to develop their skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, confidence, self-discipline and an attitude to playing rugby that is safe and sensible, using the sporting experience to help our athletes develop positive character traits and values that will help them succeed in the rest of their lives, both on and off the playing field.

The Mini & Junior section will ensure that each player is coached using the principles of positive coaching, has fun playing the game, feels like an important part of the team regardless of performance, learns “life lessons” that have value beyond the playing field and learns the skills, tactics and strategies of the game and improves as a player. All in an environment conducive to the children’s development, both socially and sporting, that is welcoming to all family members.

We recognise that the coach is the one who most directly makes this all possible. It is our goal to provide every coach with tools to be able to be successful as a Positive Coach. We are committed to creating a positive culture in which coaches, parents, fans, officials and athletes work together to achieve our mission. The Mini & Junior section encourages parents to become involved in coaching. They need not have played rugby but have to show an enthusiasm to develop the potential in the children. The section is committed to providing training opportunities for volunteers, so that they have all the necessary skills to coach and support the young rugby players. Therefore, the club ensures that every age group has a minimum number of W.R.U. / U.K.C.C. accredited coaches and is committed to increasing the numbers taking coaching awards.

Similarly, the club actively promotes the social element of rugby for the Players, Parents, Grandparents and Siblings. The section strives to organise fun social events for all players, coaches, volunteers and members. As a reward for every ones efforts and to further develop their social skills and grow as a single group within the community.

The Mini & Junior section exists ultimately to aid the development of the senior club, Porth Harlequins RFC. The Mini & Junior section is developing talented rugby players, so that they may progress into senior rugby. A key function of the junior club is to provide the solid foundations for the talent that will progress through the club and aid the seniors in achieving their objectives.
